This elegant stool (tabouret or sellette) belongs to the finest expression of the Louis XVI Neoclassical style — a period when French cabinet-making was governed by the purity, discipline and symmetry of ancient Greek and Roman forms. The circular seat with its carved frieze mouldings, fluted tapered legs with square rosette block capitals, the ornate X-shaped stretcher with urn-shaped central finial and additional subsidiary finial below, and the multi-faceted connecting rods are all precise hallmarks of the Louis XVI style that reigned at Versailles in the late 18th century. Stools of this type were made for the furnishing of royal drawing rooms, dressing chambers and private boudoirs, becoming an iconic element of French aristocratic interiors.

No clearly legible maker’s stamp has been identified on this stool. The stool is made of solid wood, finished in a pale cream-beige (“trianon gris”) with gilded tone accents in the fluted leg channels and the recesses of the carved elements. The circular apron is decorated with a finely carved twisted rope (torsade) motif and four square carved rosette medallions at the leg junctions. Four fluted tapered legs end in bun feet and are connected by an X-shaped stretcher, at the centre of which sits a refined urn-shaped finial with an additional smaller finial below — an architectural element characteristic of the finest 18th-century Parisian masters.
