These two porcelain dishes date to the second half of the 19th century — approximately 1860–1890 — and belong to the Belle Époque aesthetic with a pronounced Neo-Rococo formal language. During this period, Central and Western European porcelain manufactories revived the fashion for hand-painted landscape dishes with fantastically shaped cartouche outlines and gilded Rococo ornaments — popular as dessert or appetiser dishes, or as decorative cabinet pieces in upper-class households.
🏭 Manufacturer & mark
No manufacturer’s mark or signature is visible on the underside of either piece. Based on the whiteness and translucency of the porcelain body, the painting technique (thin, washed grey-brown tones with grey-green accents — characteristic of Central European artistic tradition), the style of the gilding, and the form of the cartouche outline, these dishes most closely resemble the output of Bohemian (present-day Czech Republic) or German manufactories — possibly Meissen, KPM Berlin, or a Bavarian works — that actively produced hand-painted landscape tableware for representational use during this period. A precise attribution cannot be made without a legible mark.

Two dishes identical in form but with differing landscape paintings — each with an expressive cartouche-shaped outline characterised by the S-curve and C-curve scrolls typical of the Rococo idiom. The porcelain is pure white, translucently thin, with a bright glaze. The centre of each dish bears a hand-painted autumn landscape in a delicate watercolour-like technique: autumnal trees beside water, reeds, and a misty sky in grey-green and warm brown tones. One composition is darker and more dramatic (approaching a winter landscape), the other warmer with amber-russet foliage tones. The relief-moulded rim and corner acanthus scrolls are richly gilded, creating an elegant contrast with the muted palette of the painted scene.

This pair works beautifully as a decorative accent on a console, writing desk, or in a vitrine alongside other Rococo porcelain pieces. Their irregular cartouche form allows them to be displayed on a wall as miniature paintings or combined with oval mirrors and gilded frames. Both dishes are in good condition consistent with their age. The painted decoration on both is clear and shows no signs of wear. The gilding on the larger dish is generally good, with minor wear marks on the rim visible in the photographs. The underside carries no maker’s mark and shows light handling marks.
