This refined chest of drawers with hand-painted floral decoration was produced in Italy, most likely circa 1920–1950, as a distinguished representative of the Venetian Rococo — stile veneziano — tradition. Venetian Rococo furniture — with its cream or pastel laccato finish, hand-painted floral ornament, and graceful cabriole legs — was one of the most sought-after categories of European antique furniture in the first half of the 20th century, when Italy’s finest cabinetmaking houses deliberately renewed the 18th-century veneziana tradition for a new audience.

The formal language of this chest is pure Louis XV dialect: a curved three-drawer bombé chest, a serpentine lower apron, cabriole legs with gold toning, and bronze rocaille bail handles — all forming a gently rhythmic, organic composition. But it is the craquelure effect — an artificially created or naturally developed network of fine surface cracks across the entire finish — that lends this chest the presence of a painted antique that never passes unnoticed.
