🏛️ PERIOD, ARTISTIC STYLE, ERA
These urns belong to one of the oldest and most venerable traditions in French ceramics — the Anduze urn tradition, born in the Languedoc region of the Gard département in southern France as early as the 17th century. Legend holds that the form was inspired by Eastern amphorae brought back by travellers from the Near East — and that the master potters of the small town of Anduze transformed it into a purely French icon: a lush green glaze reflecting the sun of Provence and Languedoc, with plastic mascaron and garland handles at the sides, horizontal throwing rings at the centre, and a flared trumpet-shaped foot.
The gardeners of Versailles were already planting orange trees in urns of this form under Louis XIV — and it is precisely this association with the Versailles orangerie that permanently established the Anduze urn as the supreme symbol of French garden culture. The form has changed almost nothing since the 17th century — it is a living tradition that continues unchanged.

Each urn bears a hand-written signature on the side: “Terre Figuière — Anduze” — one of the most authentic and recognised marks of the Anduze pottery workshops. Terre Figuière is a traditional Anduze manufactory that preserves the ancient craft methods: each piece is thrown on the wheel from local terracotta clay, coated with hand-applied green glaze, and fired at high temperature. The hand-written signature — not a stamp or sticker — is the proof of authenticity and hand-craftsmanship.
The masters of Anduze ceramics supplied their urns to the châteaux and gardens of Languedoc aristocracy for centuries, and later to the prestigious gardens and interiors of France and all of Europe.
