🕰 Period & artistic style
This service dates to the second half of the 19th century — approximately 1860–1890 — and belongs to the Victorian era / Historicism style that flourished in Belgium and northern France during this period. It is characterised by thick white faience with deep cobalt blue transfer-print decoration, imitating prestigious blue-and-white Chinese porcelain. Production of such wares was particularly concentrated in the Walloon region of Belgium, especially around Namur, where several outstanding faience manufactories were active.
🏭 Manufacturer & mark
No clearly legible manufacturer’s mark is visible on the underside of the larger pieces. However, the overall ensemble — the quality of the faience body, the transfer-print style, the form of the handles and feet, and especially the “Société Royale Nemrod” commission — is closely consistent with the output of Boch Frères Keramis (La Louvière, Belgium) or possibly a Namur-area manufactory, as the Société Royale Nemrod was a prominent Belgian Royal hunting and shooting association. Attribution to a specific maker cannot be confirmed without a legible mark — this should be stated honestly.

The service comprises: one elegant footed compote bowl with two handles, two oval serving dishes, and approximately 8–9 round and semi-oval plates. All pieces are made of white faience with a bright glaze and a uniform blue-and-white transfer-print decoration. The centre of each piece bears the Nemrod Society crest — hunting attributes (rifle, target board, crown) within a laurel wreath — and the inscription: “Le Président de la Société Royale Nemrod — Aux plus adroits tireurs au but” (“The President of the Royal Nemrod Society — to the most skilled marksmen”). The border is richly decorated with a floral and foliate ornament — acanthus leaves, berried branches, scrolling stems — in the Rococo Revival manner. The larger serving dish features a sculptural Rococo scroll handle.

This service is an outstanding collector’s piece and a decorative centrepiece for a classical or romantic interior. The plates can be displayed as a wall gallery alongside hunting paintings, antique mirrors, or wooden cabinetry. The compote and serving dishes will look superb on a console table or dining table. The majority of the service is in good condition consistent with its age. The glaze is bright and the transfer-print decoration is sharp and well-contrasted.
