This refined giltwood wall console with mahogany top is a distinguished example of the finest Belle Époque woodcarving and gilding — that luminous period from 1871 to 1914 when dorure sur bois, the art of gilding on wood, reached its absolute peak in France and Belgium. The workshops of Paris and Brussels produced pieces in which the plasticity of carved wood and the precision of gilding rival the finest 18th-century court furniture.

The console belongs to the Louis XV Revival movement — the Historicist current that, during the Second Empire and Third Republic, reanimated the formal vocabulary of Rococo with exceptional decorative richness. The silhouette is classically Rococo: a serpentine-profiled top with softened corners and richly carved rocaille ornaments covering the apron body.
