🏛️ PERIOD, ART STYLE, HISTORICAL CONTEXT

This faience cachepot belongs to the highest tier of Neo-Renaissance and Historicist decorative ceramics — a period in which French manufactories revived the ornamental world of the Italian Renaissance and Mannerism with its grotesque iconography. The decoration is executed in grisaille technique — grey-brown tones on a vivid blue ground create a three-dimensional, sculptural effect that imitates bas-relief stone carving. The central mascaron — a bearded male face in relief with serpent horns and open mouth — is a direct reference to Renaissance grotesque ornament, popularised through the motifs discovered in the frescoes of Rome’s Domus Aurea. On both sides, dynamic animals — a horse, a wild boar — are entwined in acanthus leaf and dragon scrolls, creating a vivid world of mythological fantasy. The bronze upper collar and gilt acanthus accents at the base give the piece a representative, almost museum-quality character.

⚜️ MAKER AND STYLISTIC ATTRIBUTION

Two marks are visible on the base — “L.M. & Cie” and a second partially legible mark. “L.M. & Cie” may indicate the Lunéville manufactory (Lunéville, Meurthe-et-Moselle, France) or another Lorraine region faience producer. Lunéville was one of the most significant French faience manufactories, founded in 1731, supplying ceramics to the French Royal Court and European aristocracy. In the second half of the 19th century the manufactory specialised precisely in this style — Neo-Renaissance decorative ceramics with rich grisaille and gilt ornament. Precise identification of the mark may confirm the attribution.

A faience cachepot with a complete grotesque mascaron composition, animal figures and grisaille decoration on cobalt blue ground in this state of preservation is a serious collector’s object.
